Why one valley works
Mountain weather rewards flexibility. Staying in one valley lets you choose a walk each morning based on cloud, wind and energy rather than forcing a fixed circuit. It also makes public transport and rest days easier to understand.
Build a ladder of effort
Prepare five options: a village walk, a forest path, a moderate panoramic route, one demanding day and one rain-day cultural plan. Never use a forecast as permission to exceed your experience.
Autumn trade-offs
Late September can bring quieter paths and larch colour, but lifts, huts and buses may reduce service. Daylight shortens and early snow is possible. Carry layers and turn around before conditions feel urgent.
Trail behaviour
Stay on marked paths, close gates and give grazing animals space. Pack out all waste. If a route is signed closed, choose another; erosion and maintenance are not inconveniences to bypass.
